USP researcher Ricardo Galvão receives international award for scientific responsibility.

Prof. Elaine Del Bel, full Professor at FORP-USP-Brazil and President of FALAN, sent the texts below. The professor’s goal is to confirm, once again, that science is alive in Brazil. Scientists continue to be concerned about the environment and in these texts they demonstrate their commitment to the struggle to stop the deforestation of the Amazon.

Environmentalist Carlos Nobre was nominated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science 10/02/2021 https://jornal.usp.br/?p=388790

Since 2013, the AAAS – American Association for the Advancement of Science awards individual or group actions of people who work in the scientific communities or foreign affairs and make notable contribution to the advancement of science diplomacy. And for the first time a Brazilian was nominated for the award: environmentalist Carlos Nobre, who is a collaborating researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IEA) at USP. Today, he is one of the main voices alerting to the need to stop global warming and protect the Amazon.

USP researcher Ricardo Galvão receives international award for scientific responsibility

The American Association for the Advancement of Science honored the researcher for his work in defense of scientific data on deforestation in the Amazon 09/02/2021 https://jornal.usp.br/?p=388742

Recognized worldwide for his defense of science and protection of the Amazon, the professor of the Institute of Physics (IF) at USP and former director of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), Ricardo Galvão, received this Monday, February 8, the international award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Galvão was removed from his position as director of Inpe in August 2019, after he rebutted President Jair Bolsonaro’s criticism of the institute’s data, which indicated high deforestation in the Amazon. Galvão was also recognized in 2019 by Nature magazine as one of the world’s science personalities.

Ricardo Galvão said that the country would not return to the dark ages, but to do so his peers would need to respond firmly to attacks against science. “Whenever science is attacked, we have to stand up,” he said at the time. In addition, he stated that “science has always suffered pressure from the powerful and its results are very disturbing; and the times when scientists have retreated, it has not been good for humanity.”
